This might be as close as Steve gets to playing in Journey again. Drums sound
very much what you would think when recorded w/a video recorder. Smith
playing 70-80's rock again in his new era.

Neal Schon is really a great guitarist...I have more appreciation for him every time I hear him play live. Clean and great tone.

Please Steve, hit those drums !!
I feel power and finess from guitar, bass and keys and only finess from drums.
I don´t dig Steve playing here. And neither in any rock/power fusion I´ve seen him lately.
Weak backbeat and weak sound for those powerful tunes.
I don´t feel the power, I don´t feel the groove-consistency that I need for that style.
And I´m sure this is not for the videocamera sound.

Maybe I need a third listening.
Of course this is a personal opinion.

I agree about the drum sounds/presence but I figured it was from the camera? or just the levels in the room overall. Damn guitarists always turning up!

I saw Deen the other night w/Journey live from Manila...that guy is INSANE!
Not only does he hit w/intense power, but his vocals are crazy good.
Who would have thunk it...the drummer from Journey sounds like Steve Perry.
What's the odds? Amazing talent.

SS is not Deen...ain't gonna happen...Deen owns this genre right now imo.
His groove however is a bit on top of the beat...Smith back in the day
on the same tunes (ala Captured) was epic.

I felt the same way about SS on that clip but just posted it...his fills don't work
for that genre outside the ballad stuff which he owns pretty much.

I think SS is so talented and professional he can shift mental gears and play rock...
his track record is in stone w/that genre...but he just didn't do it. Maybe not in
him anymore.

I thought there would be more comments on the drum sound...is it me or does his drums
pretty much sound like yours and mine set-up in a similar room? Kinda makes me
relate to the icons this way.

Neil is and always has been the king of melodic rock guitar. Luke is great as well, but
Neil has a more emotional feel...perfect pairing w/Perry in the early days.

I feel the exact oposite but I got to hang out with Neal for a couple of days when
he toured Europe with Soul Sirkus and my buddy Virgil. He (Neal) was very kind and talkative,
as was Marco and Jeff (and Virg, obviously). It bugged me that Soul Sirkus didn't see more
success. I still think the album rocks and Neal is a monster on it, as he always is.

But Luke owns melodic rock guitar.
