How many musicians can you guys name who started (either "per se" or "seriously practicing") playing their instrument late? What I mean by late is "late in relation to musicians like Donati, Weckl, Borlai who were merely several years old when they started practicing their instrument on a regular basis".

Both Allan Holdsworth and Steve Khan started on guitar fairly late if I recall correctly. Khan started as a drummer.

you always hear that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn something. What they don't research is the impact of age and applying what you've learned. Kids might learn to read at 3, but does that make them BETTER readers or do they simply read earlier, period? Comprehension, critical thinking and creativity are the true measurement of skill/intellect, imo.

This.

In general, it's tougher to spend huge amounts of time practicing later in life when there are bills to pay -- I think that usually ends up being the limiting factor.

Vinnie started really young and went the normal route with marching bands and stuff.

I started at 32. I'm now 35. Already being a well studied and experienced musician helps me a lot. I know music, I know how to practice and what works for me. In periods I practice a lot. In 2 days I now have about 9-10 weeks vacation. Guess what I'll be doing all day every day.
