So as i said, what I hear is a two bar phrase in 4/4.

Vinnie plays at the metered feel for 7 eighth notes, then a modulated poly feel for the remaining 9 eighth notes. If I were Vinnie and I wanted to rub some fuckedupicity on 9 notes, I would start by looking at polys over three. You can hear the modulated figure goes three times; there are three backbeats and three BD notes as a 'one'. Again, knowing Vinnie to be who he is, my guess is it's three bars of a modulated 5/16 (or 5/8 or 10/32 or something related) over the 9 eighth notes. Those of us impressed by big numbers (me) would say it's a 15:9 poly of awesome sauce, but the more pragmatic guys will say it's really just a swanky 5:3.

I'm wrapping up a nice fat 14 hour workday, so I'm honestly a little fried- but the other possibility is that it's a total of 12 notes, or three bars of 4:3. The guys on the forum here who have the killer ears will fact check me hopefully, and my guess is they'll hear 15 notes in the modulated part. Hopefully. All those Chaffee lessons shoulda done something by now.
