It's awesome. Steve is great. Like S. Holmes said some years back on here....the mystery is kinda gone where SS is concerned tho'.

Weckl on the other hand...I can't get my head around that guy

It's interesting....Steve Smith has been an amazing player for decades, and he has taken it to an uncommonly high level in terms of technique, stylistic diversity, etc., but a lot of the stuff he does nowadays just doesn't move me like his output with Journey, early Vital Information, Steps Ahead, etc. did.

Check out this solo from 1983:



Love his ideas, groove, and phrasing there, but it's almost like a completely different drummer....

I love what Steve has going on in this clip- his groove is insane, his sound is great and despite the crazy angles and heights he seems to be much looser than he is now. To me, his current sound and vibe is a bit dull. No personality at all.

I prefer the pre-Gruber Steve Smith... He was funky back in the old days..
