I just saw Steve Smith live this past friday with the Mike Stern/Bill Evans band. Super good show, all the guys killed it. Steve is in super good shape and very inspiring. I must admit that I didn't know that Tom Kennedy was such a good player, he has SO much ability. Stern is also quite entertaining to see live, he looked like a little kid who just discovered his instrument, he seemed so happy to play!!

Man, Weckl is a hard act to follow in that group specifically.

True Steve, DW owns the Stern's gig, well, I like DC too.

Yes Paul... 4/3. I don't know why I always have 5/4 stuck in my head
on that one. Hated Separate Ways when it first came out and listened
to Frontiers much later. Now feel it is a rock masterpiece played by
SS.

The song most overlooked imo however and the fill that has always stayed
with me is on After the Fall @2:50 . The song just begs for an amazing fill
at the spaces when Perry moans endlessly (one of the most irritating vocal
performances of his career...the band video doesn't help--WORST videos ever for
a major rock act for an entire LP?)

The open hat stuff was new to me back in the day as well.

Great playing all over that record, used to put it on the walkman daily.

This is a deceptively hard to groove to nail. The weird bell beat had me scratching my head back then.

Sonor are some of the best sounding drums in the world, IMO...but they're so nice, most drummers don't even know how to get the best sound out of them...but the vid sounds more like a crappy camera microphone issue...

If you think Tom Kennedy was great on this gig... You need to see him play his electric upright bass. Holy Mother Of God.
