Instrument identifiaction ?

Forgive me for the non-drum possibilities of this...I am very interested in identifying a particular instrument. If you have Richard Bona's Munia (The Tale) it can be heard in the tune "Bona Petit"....especially at 4:29 and beyond. It reminds me of a a sound you might get while pulling a string through a gourd or drum-type instrument....it oscillates back and forth and can go up & down in pitch...I love this friggin thing...and this music in general. Thank you.

Without actually hearing it what you're describing might be a cuica. When I was a kid I envisioned someone shaking the sh*t out of a monkey. I thought it was cruel! What'd I know, I was just a kid.
