Norman was all avant-garde before that "Starship" single. I have an LP of him playing with Sam Rivers from the mid-70s.

Sam Rivers Streams was Montreux 1973.

You Are My Starship was 1976 ...

... and this performance was 1978. It isn't really a straight line progression away from jazz towards pop. All of these musical expressions from Connors are brilliant and when I acquired this video I was actually hoping it was the "pop soul" stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it to be more along the lines of the experimental, avante-gard end of things. I still hope to find some pop-soul stuff from Connors. Check out the list of musicians on the Starship sessions - I mean WOW!

That's quite list! I knew Michael Henderson was involved in the record but not all those other guys. Gary Bartz, Onaje Allen Gumbs, Anthony Jackson.... Ian Underwood! And they close the album with "The Creator Has A Master Plan," very cool. Also didn't realize Norman went back and forth between the jazz and pop stuff like that.
