OT: Led Zep Disappointment

Postby Pocketplayer » Fri Feb 22, 2013 1:06 pm

Their performances are legendary and nothing will ever take that away...
BUT...as a big fan I was sorely disappointed in the overwhelming evidence
of SO many songs apparently ripped off from various artists and given no credit
over the years. It wasn't just a few tunes...it was a lot of tunes! Not just
from Zep I, on almost every LP!! Part II and III of the below video offers
more plagiarism. Point being, Led Zep just ain't Led Zep to me anymore.

Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief

In Zeppelin's defense, they didn't know any better. Completely different world back then. No one would/could get away with that nowadays.

Not true. I was around during that "different world" and I remember vividly how George Harrison was heavily ostracized and sued to the hilt for "My Sweet Lord" ripping off "He's So Fine". Zeppelin's offences pointed out in these videos are way, way worse.

Zeppelin has no defence and should be kicked out of the RRHOF as far as I'm concerned.

WHAT?! C'mon now.
I absolutely agree they totally ripped off all of those ideas AND they did know better. In fact I'm sure Peter Grant tried very hard to make all of this stuff go away. Apparently he/Zeppelin sold their catalog to Atlantic for 25 million and left them to deal with this being brought up.

Dazed and Confused was stolen from Jake Holmes, and they didn't even bothered to change the name of the tune, which gives an idea of the state of the right of intellectual property back then.

Ha...the really ironic thing is when a band like Rush was slagged for years...I mean years as being Led Zep Jr....in reality they always sounded much more like a mix of their influences...and here you are with Zep (who I love) heralded as the greatest RnR band of all time by some etc etc....and wow....blatant rip off-ism abound everywhere....by comparison Rush sounds NOTHING like Zep the way Zep sounds like who they basically stole from.

In fact Rush love or hate em sounds like ...Rush.

I did not know about them selling their catalogue like that to Atlantic...interesting trivia at the very least.

Zep was a tribute band...

Dont care, Bonham is still an amazing drummer and the music has much value.

Tribute bands don't credit themselves with writing the originals.

Major taint. Greatly devalues their name in the long run.
