I think learning traditional grip is a waste of your time. If you watch any of the masters play, when they get pushed to their limit they all switch to matched grip, even Vinnie and Virgil.
Virgil has spent more time than anyone trying to play loud and fast on a big kit and it just doesn't work or at least it takes less work to do the same thing with matched grip. He could have spent all of that time learning paradiddles with his feet or something more useful. Err, wait a minute ...

I notice more and more I am using matched grip. I think you really have to be careful over a long career playing traditional as there is very little muscle support and the fulcrum muscles/tendons can be damaged. I think Jack may have had some arthritis set-in (speculation) as he was hitting "hard" with tons of velocity over the years. Just going for it can lead to damage because it is that abandonment that feels so good, but later after the gig, you may realize that some damage may have been done.
