Not sure if it is the cam angle, but how deep is that snare?
You communicate great Steve...good energy, clear, and
precise...and the most important--connection with your
audience (student)...hard to work on the last, but when
it is there, it is there...and it is there!

Those hats sound sweet...fluffy light chick...hats matters!

Type of headphones???

Thanks Pocket! The hats are new actually - 13" master sound top and K bottom. The phones I'm not sure of - I'm not very particular about them. There's a couple laying around the shed.

Tried my hand at a Drumeo play-along. It's tricky mixing the drums and the play-along track together.
Coming up with drum parts to this tune was challenging (much less playing them). I'm very impressed with the video quality from my iPhone 6s - the front left-ish angle is from the phone.

RE-UPLOADED WITH COMPLETELY RE-MIXED AUDIO

VERY nice composition Captain Holmes!
The drums were much more in the background
than other vids however that works with the mix.
I cranked up volume max and still not loud enough.

Them fingers were really bouncing on that ride groove...

A few compositional questions while you were working out
your groove parts either formally or otherwise;

1. When you settled on the initial groove (part A), did
you try other expressions over the double open hats;
1& count?

* I like the "stall" on snare before the shift to ride.

2. On the ride pattern @ 1:24 & elsewhere, are you conscience
of how near the bell you are? Is there a feel you want
that is consistent when you repeat that pattern? Does it matter
to you?

* The tom @ 1:37 spoke to me...wanted to hear that
phrasing again second time around

3. The solo "flurry" @1:42; where did this come from?
Over playing even a more complex time feel you broke it up.
It worked well...I wondered how you would get out but you did!
Changed the feel of the tune for me and glad you didn't repeat
next time around...interesting statement.

* Really like the snare fill @1:58...back to the heart and back out again.
* Really like how you let the horn speak @2:06-30 then back to heart of snare
and into cowbell then hats for transition...OH BABY, give me more CB! Tasty...

End of song with stick was hanging...like taking a horizontal wooden bow!

I need to re-upload this with better audio - things are getting lost between Logic - Export - Premiere - Export.
Thanks for the questions and feedback Pocket.
1 - I tried several hat patterns and ended up with what's there. Mostly driven by the rhythm of the melody.
2 - My favorite ride sound is the "shoulder" - right next to (but not on) the bell.
3 - This sounded like a section where the drums could solo over. Coming out with the hits was the challenge.

Thanks again. I'm going leave this up but re-mix and re-export. Should be up in a couple hours. meantime I'l leave this one embedded.

OK. I spent most of the today learning the basics of using Logic. I re-mixed the whole thing and re-uploaded. I think it sounds a lot better now.

Love your short instructional video (Ride cymbal + left-hand hi-hat phrasing with Steve Holmes) because it can help anyone since it is a very common occurrence to play this groove. Very simple but very, very effective approach to playing this. Solid groove playing. Great sound and teaching method Steve.
