Benny greb snare...
Re: Benny greb snare...
I'm not so sure about 13" snares either, but I think Gavin Harrison plays a 12" a lot of the time. Shows what I know...
Re: Benny greb snare...
Yea, Gavin plays a 12'' which sounds great!
I have a 12'' Yamaha peter erskine sig snare and tried to make it sound like gavin's snare, but it did not work out!

i really love his snare sound. does it come in 14? 13 wouldn't be to much difference. not to many 13's out there. 12 is just way to small. works for gavin though. would like to hear gavin play a 14. sounds a bit small at times. can't go wrong with a 14 snare. then theres depth...

It sounds good, but I don't hear anything uniquely special about it. It sounds like any other high quality 13" wood shell snare of about the same depth and setup. The recording quality is very good, and makes a huge impact on the sound you are hearing.
Thing is with signature drums, you are paying almost double for the name on the badge. Benny is a fantastic player though, no doubt about it.
Can't ever have too many snare drums though, I have many 14's, 13's, a few 12's and a couple 10's and one 15

His drums always sound awesome. I have the MD festival 2010 DVD and his drums sound SOO much better than anyone elses drums on that DVD.

I've played on a Yamaha 13 Oak and it sounded great, not too high pitched but just enough higher than a 14 will get you. I have a homebrew 12" and it sounds good also.

The word here is just SONOR....
I love Sonor snares big time. Personally I do put the awesome Puresound snares on them though.

The best kind! Particularly now a days, you can order up all kinds of shells with edges cut to your specs, and even drilled for hardware. So much cheaper for basically the same exact thing. I use Yamaha hardware on snares I've made. I enjoy doing the finish work, and that's a more personal thing.. but in the end, basically the same stuff for less.
