If you don't vote then don't complain when Travis Barker, Mike Johnston and Joey Jordison are all in the top 10. :)

So vote for him in your list. If you think Meg White's minimalist approach to drumming is a refreshing change then vote for her. I have no problem with that. I was saying if you don't vote then don't complain about how dumb the list is.

*What usually happens*

There's a list of stuff. Guys complain about the list. When asked if they voted, they say No. They have no time to fill out the survey but they have all day to complain about it.

Most don't give a shit about these pointless drummer polls. Each individual has their own favorite list. No need to vote. Instead of voting spend more time viewing Vinnie YouTube videos. :D

I did vote (more for my favorite than the bests really) and I shared that with some of my students so that they get to know some of these drummers that they might not know about. Aside from that, it's pretty much just a list.

And Travis is a good drummer. Prefer Vinnie but still.

Ahhh, the ever proverbial need for man to have a "greatest" list.
The desperate cry to measure oneself to feel significant as compared
to my fellow man.

If you REALLY want to do one of these things, interview bass players
and producers who the "great" drummers are. Take name recognition
out of the picture...who one plays with, etc.

Would Ringo be RINGO w/o The Beatles?
Would Bonzo be BONZO w/o Zep?

I say YES to one of those purely based on performance, not name, yet even
I can admit I cannot totally divorce myself from name influence because it
taps into emotions...and emotions rarely are very reliable which why these
polls are...always useless, always unproductive...unless you need to sell something.

Maybe change it from "the greatest" to "the best". Ringo was in a great band. So was Charlie. That's why they are on the list. List seems to be influenced by the bands the drummers were in. How about instead of worlds top fitty change it to the universes most mad skilled drummers that blow your permed hair back. I'm sure Wek would move up on the list. He had great fusion drummer hair.

Good thoughts Kurtis...

Influential drummers poll would weed out a lot.

It seems you cannot compare Ringo to Virgil for instance
or Tony Williams to Porcaro.

Take the "band" name out, and how many would fall away?
It's just so stupid to want to hold onto a top list. There
is some cat who played some New Orleans groove back in
the 40's I thought was amazing. The drummer for Herb Albert
will never get named, Nick Ceroli, but he played great and
I loved his stuff as a kid. Sinatra's drummer, Irv Cottler will
never be on the list, but talk about playing to the song and
making those songs come alive!

Holmes has more chops than both Ringo or Watts together
and then some...there's a 15yo kid at this years NAMM show
that could blow most of the drummers away in the 70's...

If you play on a popular recording, does that make you great?
Play in a popular band? If that's the case, Nick Mason should
be at the top of the list.

I think it makes you accomplished and very fortunate to have
been at the right time and the right place.

My big issue is "lists" leave out so many who are equally deserving of
recognition and give people a way to categorize talent usually
making them feel better about their favorite band drummer and
about them self.

I once met a pretty famous drummer at a local gym in the sauna.
I was stunned at how pissed he was at the then MD drummer poll.
He told me he called the editor, asked him for more page recognition,
told me how he influenced several of the top rated drummers, how
he felt screwed...

I told him I liked him.
