I get why most people would bash this gig, but knowing Dave's ability and drive, I would think twice before questioning someone like him. The music business is Nowhere where it used to be. It's very tough to make it. You have to stay hungry and do what you can to stay alive and to sustain being able to play more preferable music. I'm assuming that he'd rather do that gig than to work a shit job and take out one's aggression and frustration on the interweb.

Opportunity and money comes your way, duh. Who gives a shit what music your playing. It's fun and your hitting things. Integrity, not a factor these days. It's a gig. He's more than qualified. He's a great drummer. Loved his performance.

I believe Dave said he was subbing for his friend Stacy Jones who is the drummer on the gig. Work is work. Gotta live.

Is this a serious question? First off, who said there was any "allure" to it? Secondly, it says a lot about any drummer who can play a gig at this level (by "this level", I mean with an artist that is drawing a lot of money and has a lot at stake, including a supporting crew of many people both on and off the stage). Everyone knows that Dave is a super talented drummer and can deliver whatever the music needs. Gigs like this pay well because they are money making machines. May as well have that money go to someone worthy, like Dave.

Granted most of the audience for these pop artist aren't jazz musicians, but how do you know they don't appreciate the music that is being played by the band?

I would argue that 98% of time we are playing 4/4 - at least most American music. And if you can't do this well, you probably aren't playing that much at all.

What you are saying comes off as snobby. BTW I dont like Miley Cyrus, or much of any pop music these days. Im not going to run out and grab the next Kesha album. Oh hell no.

The last I heard, Dave Elitch is a professional drummer - he plays music for a living...why in the world would he NOT do this gig? I would do it in a second. I know in my heart that I can play more than this kind of pop music. He has to eat and pay bills. You almost talk like he has sold out. Just because he can't break out his 21/16 chops for this song doesn't mean he has sold out. Playing music for a living is playing music for a living. You take the opportunity when it presents itself. He may have been filling in for a friend....I really can't think on one single reason why he wouldnt do this (temporary perhaps) gig. It's one freaking song for god sake.

Let's not get carried away boyz. This topic comes up a few times a year.
Ironic this is a site dedicated to Vinnie and Dave (for the most part) and
Vinnie is a studio drummer...he has played with a lot of "pop" artists and
done a lot of jingles along the road for some pretty commercial products.

Last time I remember this topic (I've been away for a while) was with
Justin Timberlake or someone like that. Someone made a great comment...
they (producers or artist) pay good money for high quality artists to
support them and make them look much better than they probably are
(JT is extremely talented on his own, but mainstream pop for sure).

I'd do the same as a producer. I'd make sure that the supporting band
was "money" every gig...and I do think average Jane in the audience
knows what a good to great band is...but they are paying for a personality.
Ask Bobby Sherman and David Cassidy...ask Michael Jackson in his early
days before he went viral...a "pop" gig with a "pop artist"...did
Jonathan Moffet sell out to MJ, Madonna, or Elton? Pretty strong pop
artists...or is it "OK" once you become a megastar?

The argument goes in circles...it is a matter of conscience and conviction.
Each to his own...and I agree, the state of music is NOT at all in the slightest
what it once was...grab it if you can! Save your coin? Invest WISELY!
