It's funny, I think Gretsch are the only drums that can pull black dots off....

I would say it's the particular kind of bearing edge on Gretsch drums. I'm also just going by what I've heard on other brands of drums...black dots on Steve Smith's kit. Ugh. Pretty scary sounding.
