Ok, for a weekend guy who doesn't want to break the bank -- any advice on a good set of mics?

2 condensers (think MXL V67, KSM32, SM81 there´s plenty of option -both SDC or LDC-)

Most mics in the $80 to $200 range are fine.

How many inputs do you have to work with?

I can probably use 6-8 (if I need them).

SM57, an alltime classic snare/toms. AKG D112 or Shure Beta52 for kick. MXLV67G for OH.

What Jim said. Although, I've got an AKG Perception 220 for an overhead that can hear a fly fart in the next room. Crazy mic.

As a side note these save a lot of headache:

I have these and my only regret is not getting the 25' ones. The 12' still work ok though.

Lucas, are those cables any good? At that price I can't believe they would last. Condenser mics are very sensitive and tend to make all sorts of noise if the cables aren't very good.
