only so much can really happen meeting one time outside of the "WOW factor" of sitting with a
hero of sorts.

Cats like Steve, who I think has a gift to teach, who listen well and can really focus on a student
is just as valuable.

A great teacher can see straight through a player. I've had that experience a few times. Bernard Purdie took all of 6 seconds to know what to say to me. Some stuff I knew about but didn't realize I was doing and some other stuff that was really heavy and helpful. Your right - it has a lot to do with focus. If you go in knowing what your gonna tell the student, then it doesn't work so well. If you listen to the student, connect with them and observe, even a 1 hour lesson can be valuable.

Thanks a lot Joe. I enjoy teaching and wish I tried to create more opportunities to do it more these days

I had a similar experience with Gary Chaffee. This was before Berklee just after he had left Western Illinois and I went with a couple of his former students to get a 1 on 1. He was running short on time but the little bit I had lasted virtually a lifetime for me. He had me play a little time then we talked. He pointed out several things that I had repeated that he guessed were patterns I was comfortable with and tended to lean on. He proceeded to outline what would become the basis for his Patterns series but even went deeper in terms of the idea behind it. It was all about taking rhythmic patterns completely apart and finding all the myriad ways of practicing them. It went beyond simply applying stickings and accents etc...he had me thinking about playing in the cracks (rests), playing the rhythm backwards, upside down, between voices...doing whatever variations I could come up with. His idea was to train the mind and body to be able to see beyond the surface and learn to compose spontaneously (or simply, improvise).

I don't dig the drums only thing, but that's where it's at. If they brought in some musicians to show how it all works, and play with the groups, that would be cool, and challenging.

Hmm, if you could have something like this with the focus on interacting with musicians, or a sequence as that's popular, rather than just drumming, that would pique my curiosity.

I would rather spend 100 bucks on a lesson where I played with Lee Sklar or another killer bass player.

ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES:

RICK LATHAM (USA)
(“The Funk Master-Doctor of Groove”)
(Quincy Jones, Edgar Winter, The Groove Doctors, B.B.King)
Born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, and now residing in Los Angeles,
Rick is best known as one of the music industry’s most in demand studio and touring drummers today. He is an exciting performing artist, composer, globally renowned author and drum-guru. At just 25 years of age, it was the success of his ground breaking drum text, ADVANCED FUNK STUDIES, that launched him into the international percussion spotlight, but it has been his expertise as a versatile performer that has made him one of contemporary drummings' most respected players. Rick was a featured member of THE EDGAR WINTER BAND for nearly a decade with hundreds of stellar performances, including a special appearance at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival. Before moving to LA, Rick was also a member of R&B bass legend CHUCK RAINEY’S band - "Rainey Man." and performed with such greats as the late great B.B.KING during this time. His versatility has also been highlighted on the theme for television's "9 to 5" series, "Fame," the QUINCY JONES produced soundtrack, “Fast Forward” and more recently the DVD release of "Gone in 60 Seconds”, "Daredevil" and “Spiderman”. Shortly after relocating to Los Angeles, Rick released his second successful book CONTEMPORARY DRUM SET TECHNIQUES and soon afterwards the instructional videos that parallel these works.
Rick has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe and Asia and is frequently invited as a featured performer to leading jazz festivals, drum festivals and percussion related events around the world. In a recent feature interview, MODERN DRUMMER Magazine refers to him as “a man who many consider to be one of the best clinicians on the planet”. The magazine also names his ADVANCED FUNK STUDIES among “The 25 Greatest Drum Books Ever Published". Rick endorses DW drums, ISTANBUL MEHMET Cymbals, EVANS Drumheads and PROMARK Sticks. His Autograph Series drumstick "THE RICK LATHAM PROMARK GROOVE STICK 717" and "THE RICK LATHAM CRYSTAL BALL" clear resin bass drum beater are both best sellers at drum shops around the world.

CLAYTON CAMERON (USA)
(„King of Brushes“ & UCLA Drum Professor)
(Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, James Taylor, Frank Sinatra)
A native of Los Angeles, California, Clayton’s career has already crossed many barriers in the world of music. From SAMMY DAVIS,JR. to TONY BENNETT, from RAY CHARLES to JAMES BROWN he continues to push the envelope of contemporary drumming to the limits. After the release of his first DVD, “The Living Art of Brushes" Clayton was given the honorary title “KING OF BRUSHES”. During those years he also played for Sammy’s Rat Pack friends-DEAN MARTIN and FRANK SINATRA. The three toured together selling out theaters and stadiums alike. In 1992, while living in New York City, Clayton got another once-in-a-life-time opportunity and started an unbelievable six years of world-wide touring and recording with the incomparable TONY BENNETT. “Performing with Tony has been a thrilling experience. His love of music and entertaining people has won him countless awards from Grammys to Emmys. I’ve had the pleasure of recording with Tony on six albums. Each of the albums received GRAMMY nominations and five of them WON the prestigious award!” Clayton performed for presidents, royalty, charities and beyond.” During this time he also performed with many other great artists including STING, MARIAH CAREY, JAMES TAYLOR, ELVIS COSTELLO, RICKY MARTIN and many more. In 1992 John enrolled into Berklee College of Music and kept himself busy creating a strong buzz about him while performing as much as possible. In 1995 he landed a gig with CAMEO and played with them for the next 3 years. In 1998, he moved to Los Angeles. He was in LA for only 3 days when he landed the drum position for the legendary R&B Diva, PATTI LABELLE. Back in college (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) I had a chance to crash an Aebersold clinic...I knew Ed Soph at the time and he invited me to hang. It was kinda cool so I signed up for one the following year. I was in Joe Henderson's "group." That experience in and of itself was worth it. Not to mention the guys in that band were all stellar players from around the midwest. So there was the opportunity to attend masterclasses with Ed and Louis Hayes (that was unforgettable) and to have Joe Henderson mentor this great group I was in. A lot of great hangs and playing for that week. They still hold them but only at U of Kentucky now.
