18" Floor Toms

Postby Jim Richman » Sat Oct 25, 2014 6:38 pm

So i recently purchased a Pearl BCX kit. (But i don't have it yet) I got an 8x8,10x8,12x9,14x14ft, and a 20x18 kick. Now, eventually i want to get another floor tom.
Instead of getting the expected 16", i have the idea of getting an 18" floor tom. Does anyone have experience with 18's. I think it could be tuned up a bit and be monstrous, but i really don't know. :?

Ok. 14 toms can get pretty low, and sometimes its hard to tune a 16 signifigantly lower. So I will skip the 16 and go large. This drumset is gonna be the most fun ever!!!!

Awesome! What finish? Any particular reasons behind choosing Pearl?

I got the bronze sparkle laquer, which i think looks money. I am downgrading my drums, trying to off my exotix set.
So anyway, why Pearl? Well i was actually looking for a Tama Birch Performer, but it is very hard to find a set with all the sizes, and getting additional drums is near impossible. So i was in a pawnshop and i saw a Pearl MCX Mapke Masters snare. It was sitting on an extended size Yamaha single brased snare stand. And it had a case. I asked how much, and he said 129 for all! Of course i bought it. It was mint. I took it home, set it up and started playing it. It was awesome. The strainer was right on, the diecast hoops very nice, and the finish was real sweet, chesnut fade.

I thought about getting a Starclassic Maple, but the price was too high for my budget. The Pearl MCX was closer, but still a bit up. Then i saw the BCX kit. Diecast hoops, optimounts, laquer finish, and birch. The new price for a 4 piece shell pack is around 1200, instead of 1800 and up for the maple guys.
So i traded in a whole bunch of cymbals and a few snares that i never use and got the kit even. I did order an 8x8 which i paid a couple for. And they threw in two Pearl arms. With tax it came out to 1500 for 8x8 10x8 12x9 14x14 and 20x18.

I will do a complete review of the kit when i get it. Down the road i will pick up the 18 floor and most likely the birch snare. I am stoked.

I do like that Pearl tends to do deeper bass drums versus diameter a bit more...I'm thinking about building a 20x22 to go with my Gretsch kit...

I also plan on building an 18 floor tom...die cast hoops for those are ridiculously expensive though. :-0
