To bring balance, the music industry aint what it used to be so i applaud
creative outlets for income...if you pay to hear these guys, then you pay
to hear these guys...it is the same in the financial market...tons of weekend
financial seminars all over...if you read a book they gloss over maybe 10%
of the content. For the critical thinker it is a lot of window dressing...
but a lot of people like window dressing...it is called Hollywood and
visiting LA...tourism mentality. Dom is doing a good thing...he can
facilitate well and that is a skill. Let's be honest...drum clinics are
mostly show n tell...see your favorite drummer put on a circus show.
Many guys too that route for a long time...eat the melon, spit out the seeds
kinda thing...good reason to hang with friends. NAMM is the ultimate
music circus...when Gene Simmons walks the floor for an hour with
about 50 guys following him like he was leading them to the promised land...
that is circus!

Man - tough crowd! Maybe I'm getting softer in my middle age but I prefer to be plain about the good and bad without resorting to poking fun I guess. I AM getting softer, I know it. Well, more passive I think. Anyway:

Dom has raised awareness to drumming and the drumming community literally all over the world. His generation is the last that will have stories that deal with first hand experience with the guys at the start of modern drumming. Chapin. Morello. Gruber. I love his enthusiasm and applaud his dedication and passion. When I saw him in clinic with Libert DeVito in Berlin New Jersey in the late 80's I was blown away BIG time.

Nowadays his drumming may not have the effect it used to because what we know to be possible on the drums has drastically changed since then. Also, his style works well in small venues, not so much otherwise. Big bashing double bass rolls with smashing cymbals, that kind of thing. Oh, also he brought that whole hitting the side of the cymbal thing to the forefront pretty much single handidly. He knows dynamics, how to build to a fury and then put it down gently.

You guys are right about him playing to music - obviously not his forte. He doesn't profess otherwise though.

It's OK to just want to teach. Playing music with others is very challenging and if one decides they don't want to climb that mountain but are still passionate about music and have respectable abilities, what's wrong with capitalizing on that and just doing clinics and teaching? Especially as one gets older; dealing with people can be a thing. Much less clubs and money.

Dom's a drum community VIP. Let's show some respect.

Clinicians like Dom and Mike Johnston are for beginners to drumming. They are great at showing many facets and fundamental in a flashy entertaining way, much like the crazy flashy martial arts demo competitions they have.

It's not necessarily meant to be be for refined players or directly applicable to pro level work, but it gets beginners interested and it's also not bad technique wise. Just personal taste wise.

Dom might not be your flavor of choice, but he never claimed to be what he's criticized for not being.

Dom's out there doing it, making a good living playing drums, traveling the world and bringing joy to people.

There is nothing better than that in my view. He has guts and more energy than 99% of the population. He is old school, NLP in his thinking, I love that about him. I have the ultimate respect for how he's gone about things, the playing I can take or leave, but I'm just a person typing words on a message board.

Exactly. He needs to tone it down. I feel that he tends to emphasize the wrong things and this perpetuates more of the same from others as a result.
He is a drumming instructor & author turned motivational speaker.
Let's not forget that drums are supposed to support and serve the music. Otherwise you venture into plate spinning and bowling pin juggling territory.
