Even back in the olden days, Steve was a goddamn MONSTER:

I think he was a little pissed at the in-ears. He whaled on that gong at the end.

I get the feeling Steve did some serious wood shedding after this 'event'
interesting Smitty described this as a competition...he seemed like he
wanted to 'win'...another drum wankery fest in who can play faster
while wearing tuxedos.

A super wow in the evolution of Steve's ergonomic switch from the '83 days!
Seeing him reach for that bell ride is light years from his current Journey motion.
I love that snare tho...

Steve looks like he got NO sound here at 0:12 Ooops, caught on camera.
Arnel losing that high tenor

No need to critize on Arnels voice. Lots of gigs, getting older, genetics, life style and so forth. You have a certain amount of time frame until it's out of your reach physically. Geddy Lee's voice live has been shot since the late 90's. Vocal cords have lots to deal with.

Maybe his voice was only a little strained but his brain 'inserted the feeling' of note failure and so it was? Or perhaps the discordant note you think you hear is actually something else ... like a clock that doesn't tick or some $hit.

No...he's just losing that golden high tenor to match those classic notes
recorded by a legendary singer. Unlike Geddy Lee who is always compared to
himself, Arnel's gig is cloning a legend and unlike a guitar that can be tuned
to the sound of 1981, the voice is prone to wear n tear...especially a high tenor
that is on tour. That killed Perry's career according to a classical singer/teacher
who said it was career suicide to have a voice of his caliber doing 180 gigs
for ten years. Once a fan stops hearing that voice comparison,
they either have already accepted the new voice (Arnel's been w/Journey now
longer than Perry was) or they still want to hear THE VOICE. Just the way it is.
I can overlook Smith's lack of energy and fire from the glory days, but Journey
was THE VOICE band.

All good Pocket. Dean ruined a great dream gig. He killed singing faithfully and open arms. He's filled in the entire show when Arnel is sick. Shame substance abuse got the best of him. He fit the gig perfectly.

Mr Smith seems to be doing a good job. He's no young chicken. I liked his playing better when he was a young chicken tho.
