“We were able to take things with Jeff and Mike that were recorded during the 1981 to 1984 era, and Sony found a whole vault full of s--- that we forgot about,” Lukather says. “Just basic tracks that we didn’t use, because 'Oh, that chorus sucks.' So we were able to go in and go, 'Well, the chorus sucks, but the f---ing track was killer. Can we fix this? Let’s rewrite it and insert it.' We were able to do that now.”

The group used that process on “Spanish Sea,” which grew out of a musical idea from the period when it was working on the 1984 album Isolation. “As David says, it’s an heir apparent to an ‘Africa’ kind of a groove," Lukather notes. "It’s got massive Brian Wilson-like vocals on it. We really went for it. We said, ‘Well, if we’re going to be over-produced and everybody hates that s--- about us anyway, our fans love it, so let’s give them what they want.’ So we kitchensinked this bad boy!”

A lot of effort for this...ehhh

Like this MUCH better!

I am thoroughly underwhelmed by these new/old songs. I so wanted them to be good but I think there's a reason
they were left out of albums until now.

Fan bummer.

I'm quite underwhelmed by these two new tunes too, Struck by Lightening is the better of the two. But Spanish Sea has been getting massive radio airplay in the UK which is a great thing for Toto.

" Spanish Sea has been getting massive radio airplay in the UK"
People think it is Africa then half way through just let it play. lol
David is not a lead vocalist...the falsetto part is horrendous.
If this gets airplay, let's you know how music is at an all-time low
stuck in confusion because this song IS 1984 all over again!
...and I love me some TOTO...but if we are going back in time,
go with anything off of Kingdom od Desire for Jeff!

So I recall an interview with Lukather in which he said (very much paraphrased):

"Back in the late 80s and early 90s, I would often hear someone playing someone playing drums in the studio in another room - it was some insane Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips-style sh*t, incredibly fast, aggressive, and technical - and right as I walked into the room the drumming would stop and I would see Jeff on his kit. And I would say to him, 'Goddamn it man...you should play like that in front of other people!' And he would simply grin mischievously and say "Nah." He never wanted to be known as a 'chops guy' doing drum solos - he just wanted to play songs, groove and pocket stuff which he's rightly renowned for, and he always downplayed his chops and technique. That was Jeff."

Pretty revealing of Jeff's character in my humble opinion. :)

Rosanna isolated drums and Whole Lotta Love drumless mashup.
