RIP David Bowie

Postby Pocketplayer » Mon Jan 11, 2016 7:37 pm

The man was an artist! Learned a lot of the unknowns today...studied mime in
the 60's and lived in fear he would get schizophrenia like his brother. Listening
to these back to back...WOW, the man was signature, unique, one-of-a-kind
w/tremendous composition skills. Was HUGE in Japan and Germany...had a
significant impact on Japanese fashion. Covered so much ground...good actor
as well. Man suffered six heart attacks in his life!

Drumming on this was incredible! Great sound.

EPIC

He always, to me at least, had a great public persona, never got into anger and rage and all that. Had a smile most times you saw him, and his performances were always of high quality in appearance, details and performance. Ken Russell talks about him very nicely in his book, he was a very productive person and active.

And would we all have heard of Stevie Ray without him? There are some ripping bootlegs from back then, they were on fire.

I am still struck by how he loved music and resisted the destructive impulse, and embraced being creative and live performance. I can ony imagine how much concerted effort it took.

There is some amazing texture to this tune, Newmark playing. Try listening to this album all the way through sometime. I can remember when I first did it. I was very sick at my Nona's house, and laying on a bed in her back room, letting this take me away.

This is another fave of mine, I used to play along to this regularly.

Truth is, some artists are inevitably and universally good. Bowie was one of them, all the way throughout his career. It's one thing to change and evolve but to be socially and musically challenging while retaining such ammount of musical finesse and pop sensibility is beyond my comprehension. I haven't been the biggest fan, but he was such an important figure for everyone who dares to put his heart out there and do it boldly, without labeling compromise... And his composing was so friggin' good... I've been singing Space Oddity in my head for the past couple of days. Can't shake it off, it's one of those songs that are with you from the very first time you hear it.
I got the news when I got up to take the kid to school and was shaken. Then got in the car, turned on my radio and they were playing Starman on Rock FM. Couldn't help the tears.
