I wasn´t pointing to anyone Paul...
Great grooves and tunes by everyone.
It has to be a blast as a drummer, create a groove that played alone, without any instrument, you immediately know what song it belongs: Rossana (Jeff has many), Superstition, 50 ways, We will rock you...
Keep the groove going !!

I know, I was just agreeing with you. Iconic patterns/beats/grooves fascinate me too. They're not common. And I don't know if they even occur much anymore, now that everything is either computer generated or digitally massaged.

I saw Rossana some days ago and I posted it yesterday (I forgot it was posted).
Another prove that Jeff is in our mind every drumming day.

I created this topic looking for grooves that were distinguishable (1-2 bars long),
that defined a song, not exactly for songs with excellent groove.

lol...well, I honestly don't get the (1-2) bars thing because a great groove is what
a song is 'with an excellent groove.' Your intro vid w/Vinnie wasn't a song...looked edited.
Josie comes to mind as a great groove...not the Live Ersko groove but studio.
Damn, everything is complicated today!

I loved Paul's phrase, "Digital Massage"

I've always prefered "Josie" by DC, on Steely Dan Live, than the original one with Keltner.

Maybe I didn´t explain well in the first post.
I don´t want to put rules to the topic...It´s just that if we post "Songs with good groove", the pages would go to +1000...
About the the 1-2 bar thing: a groove that you hear 1-2 bars (if the drums isolated) and you know what song is: the perfect example is Rossana, 50 ways. Sade´s Sweetest Taboo...
It doesn´t mean that the song has to start with drums, but most of them do it (examples above, Billie Jean, We will rock you...)

Of course Vinnie´s video is not a song, it was clearly edited, capturing some 1-2 bars of Vinnie´s rain of ideas.
If some of those Vinnie´s grooves belonged to a song, they would be clearly grooves with character, with own life...
Everything what I say goes with this... :)

As Paul said, those iconic grooves are very difficult to see anymore...

Only one I can think of that competes with "50 Ways........." as a song signature for anyone, would be this one.

Rodge got me thinking of this groove that I love (Richie Hayward):

A Steve Ferrone session date with Freddie King turned out this great groove:

Some of my favorite Vinnie grooving (not really a 1-2 bar thing though):
