Looking for a certain Buddy Rich video...

Postby GoAndPractice » Mon Oct 10, 2016 12:18 am

Hey everyone. I was talking with a friend the other day about this one buddy rich clip and I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called or where it was filmed.

The video was his band performing what I believe was their final song (I want to say it was at a jazz festival but it might not be) and there was a moment where there was supposed to be a unision ritardando, a drum solo, then the final note.

Something must have not been tight during the slow down so Buddy turned to the horns in the silence and said "What happened?!", did a cheesy lame fill as a gesture to them, and then hit the final note. He stood up waved his hand at them dismissively and then went up front to wave to the audience and bow and all that. The audience was still of course on their feet applauding.

Does anyone know which concert I'm talking about?

Montreal Jazz Fest 1982..."Good News" ending! I loved the sound of his drums in that concert.

Guy was a 'one of a kind' on every level.
Freak of nature. Has an "I don't give shit"
attitude. I just keep coming back to the
fact that he coined so much of this style
and technique, learned only by seeing live
performers and listening to records.
The 1:1 w/other drummers a given.
Intrinsic brilliance over accumulated brilliance
we see today.

Insane amount of innate ability plus being born in an era where you can make a living performing every night (also in a band where you have a blank check as to how much soloing you're allowed to do). He's the perfect storm.

I've always loved his snare and ride cymbal sound too.

Thanks for the tip DrumGodsey. I was starting to believe I was going crazy trying to remember where that was.

This concert blew my mind apart, such musical playing and his technique was so killer in these years, with looked to me more intensity, volume and power. His snare sound beefy and rock-like. Like Bonham on multiple cycles of steroids. He is playing a ping-ier ride too, and his bass drum is volcanic.

Sometimes his snare sounded to me, at least on recordings, a bit brittle.

Yeah definitely bonham sounding bass and toms.

This whole concert is actually recorded and mixed really well. It seems like there's only VHS and DVD formats. I wonder if any straight audio exists
