Does anybody know what the real deal is with Gretsch now? As in, is DW making their shells? I know Hal Leonard and DW recently came to an agreement on distribution rights, but is Gretsch still making the higher end shells in Ridgeland, SC? Or is Gretsch making the shells to their own specs at the DW factory? I've read several things, just curious if anybody knows what the real deal is.

I just got a new Brooklyn kit in Oct.. I ordered it in the summer. Took about 4 months and it was made and came from SC. The hurricane shut them down for a bit. Sold my Yamaha MC's on ebay in one night which was surprising to me.....initially sad to see them go but I got over it. Diggin the Brooklyn's w/ a 20" kick

They're being made by descendents of Vikings in Newfoundland now.

Paul...dude...THAT was funny! I needed that...laptop died
and went on craigs "I will lie to your face" list and bought a
"notebook" for $20 meeting a guy in Van Nuys at a rehearsal
studio (was hoping Steve was playing in room 202 because
that guy was killing it)--the guy didn't tell me what room he
was in (there were 100 rooms)! I'll tie this to NAMM shortly...

I find this hottie outside in a BMW and she opens the main doors
and I roam (guy sounded like he was into rap so eliminated all the
hard rock guys, drummers, guitarists, and narrowed it to two
rooms...then the "knock"--guy opens door and it was literally
a scene out of a Cheech and Chong movie--pot smoke so thick
I could not see his girls on the couch across the room.

He says, "How did you find me...do you know me? How did you
find me in all these rooms?" I guessed bro...you got the laptop?
Now the fun part...sitting on the floor outside in the hallway
this notebook is password protected.

"What's the password bro?" ...Ummm, yeah, well my dad gave it
to me and he's in New York so... We danced for about 10 mins on this
and the cursor was frozen. I was tired..."I'll give you $20 bucks"
OKAY...and I left then realized he didn't give me the charger and
started the process all over waiting for someone to open the door
and I forgot the room number (those rehearsal rooms feel like a maze
and I was the proverbial rat)...found it and now I have a notebook
w/a 10 inch screen. The one thing that kept the flow going was
talking about the NAMM show while we were dancing back & forth.

It didn't help my cell phone died this week so I went old school and
people today (so it seems if you are under 30) can't fathom life
w/o texting...I told him about the cell phone and he was waiting for
my text to ask about the room and entrance code.

Moral of the story: Hotties in BMW's rule!

OK...back to hardware talk... (oh, and I forgot all my passwords for
forums...I started this account in 2000 and that password was forgotten
years ago...another lucky guess to share this worthless tale)

Thanks for the laugh Paul!

Haven't heard about anything but a new wrapping machine.

I'm sure they're helping with the business end. Changes and options will probably come, but what's the point if it creates the same opinions of the older stuff being better as before.

I see one of those 4x12s in my future.

Somehow I knew I'd regret asking this question here.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Nothing has changed with the American made shells. Same Keller made stuff, finished in South Carolina.

I got the joke... and it's a fair shot, since I'd agree there's probably way too much marketing noise about drums today.

It's just that DW's "corporate acquisition strategy" (for lack of a better term) seems so ambitious the past few years. I've read that they were really only trying to save Gretsch from going under, and I've also read they were more interested in obtaining Gretsch's name recognition than anything else and would sooner or later take over manufacturing. The truth is probably somewhere in between there. Either way, you're right, the details are really just drum nerd shit... there's not a lot anyone can do to change anything, and a person should buy what suits them best independent of marketing.

You did answer my question WRT to shells though, so thanks!

There´s no such a thing in the world of business. In the end it´s all about profit.

Fred was all about profit before. No help needed with that attitude.

Mr. Good has a somewhat different attitude maybe. Definetly suffering from the options over sound quality syndrome, though.
