An old favourite for sure.

At least he reached a decent age.

I remember my first introduction to Al was the old live live recording of "Roof Garden" as we were to play that at an annual christmas jam session.

Al was running on the stereo constantly in my laste teens along with Ritenour, Carlton, Manhattan Transfer, Toto, Joni...

Only saw him live once. It was at the jazz festival in Molde in '96. He did "Alonzo" as an encore and it's still one of the absolute best memories I have of seeing any live show.

Sad news. One of my favorite artists. My drum teacher introduced me to his music. Here are some recommendations. Al always had great drummers playing for him! If you're a Steve Gadd fan, you already own these albums...(all Jay Graydon produced)

Album: This Time (1980)
Tracks:
- Alonzo (Ralph Humphrey) ~fucking unbelievable 6/8 feel
- Spain (Steve Gadd) ~ This is the Gadd gold standard.

Album: Jarreau (1983)
Tracks:
- Mornin' (Jeff Porcaro) ~quintessential Porcaro shuffle
- Save Me (Steve Gadd) ~another Gadd favorite- the '1-ah' backbeat
- I will be Here for You (Steve Gadd) ~Gadd feel and groove for days. Sixteenths on those hi-hats will never be duplicated.
- Back and Blues (Jeff Porcaro) ~another signature Porcaro groove- uptempo 12/8

Album: Breakin' Away (1981)
Tracks:
- Easy (Steve Gadd) ~Another Gadd samba with 4 on the floor. Genius...
- Breakin' Away (Jeff Porcaro) ~Nobody does it better. My personal favorite Porcaro shuffle.
- Blue Rondo a la Turk (Steve Gadd) ~if Aja was Gadd's thesis, Blue Rondo is his dissertation. A true masterpiece!

Al's music greatly enriched my life. Check these out!

Cheers

L is for Lover is amazing. The line up is stellar and production crystal clear. Steve Ferrone and Anthony Jackson kill on it. Best rock/fusion samba ever in Across The Midnight Sky (epic tune) I recommend this to everyone. You cannot go wrong.
