What's your most difficult part of the Rudimental Ritual?

Postby GoAndPractice » Tue Feb 13, 2018 11:11 am

For me it's the Flamadiddlediddle... I hate that thing.

Also the flam accents with the flam on the second partial are awkward.
Honorable mention to the Ratamaflam, that one catches me off guard.

Also does anybody actually play the triple stroke needed to go from the six-stroke roll section into the paradiddlediddle? I usually skip that one at high speeds. In my mind I count that as a writing error even though I'm sure there are people who can play it.

I´m doing the Ritual with the metronome on 20bpm (playing it at 160bpm)... The transition from quartet note triplets (flams) to flam taps is still hard for me...
If you´re up for a challenge, play the Flamadiddlediddle with an accent on the second note of the first diddle... fRlrRll fLrlLrr

seeing this thread the first thing was flam related with my weak hand...
was watching a video recently and this drummer focused on only a few
rudiments and flams was at the top of his list...the idea was to cover
the rudiments that embrace all the rest

i will look for this drum corp guy that breaks flams down...he has an
interesting approach isolating each hand before combining...it was about
getting the form down first...when i tired it i was surprised how both hands
worked together quick...one of those ''why didnt i think of that before'' moments

some Dr John to get started...

this guy is pretty solid

how do you play triplets while keeping the samba foot pattern? I attempt to play by feel. or do you adjust the foot pattern to triplets as opposed to eights/sixteenths?

I have the foot pattern on such an autopilot that they stay playing straight 8ths while my hands are playing triplets. If I adjust it to a swing feel at all it's by accident, definitely not a thing I consciously shift depending on if it's a triplet or not.

Once you get the speed up it kind of happens that way naturally I think.

Been a while since I worked on it, but it was also one of the first things I started working on since John's book was some of the first material I got.

Yeah. Everything was a bit weird back then if it didn't line up easily, but it should be fine now. If one really want to nail the triplet thing one can start with quarters in the feet, nail that and then just slow down to easy counting speed, add the ful pattern and it shuold be fine.
