A question about Freddie Gruber

Postby sevenoverthree » Tue Jan 18, 2011 2:49 pm

At the risk of putting my foot in my mouth, can someone direct me to ANY recorded footage of Freddie Gruber actually playing drums? I can't find audio, video, studio credits- NOTHING! Even the wiki is basically empty. All I wanted to do is hear what he sounds like. I've seen all the talks you all have seen, and I was really curious to his playing style. Am I missing something here???

I found this pretty funny. Freddie has some great wisdom, but the guy does talk like he's in the Matrix. There is no shortage of demonstrative pronouns with Freddie:

To reiterate the OP's point, none of these show him actually playing. What is known about him in this regard?

Some people are better at teaching than at playing. Freddie Gruber has helped many drummers become better drummers. The fact that he doesn't have a huge discography doesn't take anything away from that. Look at Gary Chaffee's list of recordings. I consider Gary Chaffee to be one of the most important educators for drummers of all time, but I can't say that his playing moves me as much as many other players.

If Freddie's ramblings don't strike a chord with you, look elsewhere. It's not always in the playing. Sometimes it's more about the approach and attitude.

I love how Freddie get's ripped on in the "Traditional Grip" HoD video haha.

True what DSOP says, some are great educators, others great players.

Check out Gary Chester - The man was BOTH!

For sure- totally agree. Was just curious. I actually like how Gruber intellectualizes it, and no doubt he has been immensely helpful for many of the greats.
