Met Steve a few times...always returns emails...hard worker...
his phrasing speaks to me more than most in his caliber.
That Spud solo was nutz...trading back & forth w/guitar...
very high level conversation happening there.

He deserves more breakdown...his vocabulary is deep.

I really dig this cats playing, it's precise, articulate and very mature. He has a distict style that is clearly being developed on a daily basis.

Have watched all of his vids and will definetly be bugging him for some lessons when I get to the states.

I really dig the syncopation in that groove and the fill at the end. I also found this clip of him reading with The New York Voices. He's a very functional working type drummer on top of what he can do creatively in the jazz world. This is why drummer's like this can make a living in these times.

Turns out my new lockout is in the the same building as Steve's. Should be a good hang.

The New York Voices stuff is major league playing imo. You can't fake your
way through that show. Something about these guys that yells...WE ALL
ARE REALLY FREAKIN' TALENTED (at a scary level)

Steve...sounds like you and Hass need to get started on the next HOD short feature.
Dude...you're due for a little drum film. Let's get a HOD idea thread going...
w/t talent in here, we can pool ideas into something worthwhile. It's
all about possibilities.

Hass can do no wrong. He is SO good.

One of my very faves. So dynamic. So
many worlds in him. In my opinion, what
every drummer should want to be.

Regards,

P

I agree with Pocket Player and Peter. As a semi-pro and drumming fan I also wish that Steve Hass along with Cliff Almond and a few other lesser known monster drummers would get some better gigs. Guys in this forum too like Steve Holmes and Rodge. By better I don't mean musically as much as notable. Scofield was a big one for Hass but I wouldn't mind seeing him or Cliff on a big rock/pop artist tour. Gary Novak was able to break through that wall. I'd like to see more talented, well versed, experienced players on those gigs. No offense to the Robin Dimaggios and Randy Cooke's of the drumming community, but they don't play with the swagger, taste, musical knowledge and back round of the drummer's I'm talking about. I would love to see them land something other than Manhattan Transfer or whatever. I know a gig is a gig, and drummers do what they must to survive. Not knowing if they're even interested, I would love to see them in that big tour setting.

Babko/Lefebvre/Hass feverishly killin' it!

EDIT: I'd buy a CD (with liner notes) of this kind of stuff, right now!

WOW! I love the drum ideas in the first minute and then they appear to be searching until about 8:46 where some killer ideas start flowing. Some of the long flowing fills like at 14:46 are simply amazing. What begins at 15:11 is quite simply one of the funkiest grooves I've ever heard. No wonder why Hass plays on dance tracks so often.

Slightly better version without the interruption:
