more wow. watched it a second time a few hours later and made more of an impact. his control is just so over the top. no one has his chops! this clip really shows some brilliant stuff!!! i watched the mike stern paris dvd with weckl 2008 tonight. then i had to watch this over and over. what weckl does in and hour and a half blows your mind but in this clip vinnie just blows your skull membranes in a few minutes.

This clip is a good demonstration of what I struggle to put into words when people want me to explain why I hold Vinnie in such high esteem over other drummers. I think drummers typically are impressed by the thing that most challenge them at the moment, and it most typically takes a progression like this: hands --> feet --> hands/feet --> independence. Vinnie has not only mastered each level but he maintains one of the most sympathetic ears a drummer could have, so his contribution is this constant stream of composition -- things just tend to make sense no matter how far over the ledge he goes. He anticipates hits and transitions like he wrote the song, so things just flow together from start to finish so beautifully, and he does it with the most complex pieces of music. I think it allows the other musicians to take more risks because they know Vinnie will get them back off the ledge if they go with him.

I can write about what I hear, but it's still impossible for me to imagine what it's like to be in that control of the chaos. Someday, just once, I'd love to experience a musical moment like that. Just once.
