Darren Altman wrote:Thanks for the link Juan and John. Ridiculous! Funny though, as I was watching this I thought if I shredded (obviously not with his skills) like this on a soundcheck, I'd get fired! Who blows so loudy, sheds and practices like this on soundchecks?

I do, because when it's my soundcheck I do what I want, and when it's not my time anymore I leave the stage, it's too frustating to stay behind the kit without playing. :)
And when I tour with an artist/crew for a longtime, I manage to have some time for practicing on stage with the huge sound, sound engineer love it !!! :D
I go to the venue way before the other musicians, I can have something like 30/45 mn alone on stage, I need this on tour as I play almost the same thing every night.

I've had the chance to watch this footage several times now, and there are a few things that stick out. First of all, I'm quite surprised that Vinnie tolerated the camera being as close as it was, and I'm shocked that he decided to basically go balls-out while *any* camera was rolling. We're quite literally getting an instructional-video view during some of those moments, which is something for which most all of us have pined! Sure, there were times when he made eye contact with the camera, but, in this performance, I never got the impression that it really added the usual sand to the vag.

In terms of parts, my favorite was when he took the rhythm and moved it to the toms/snare/kick at 2:29. As has been said a gazillion times, there's something that's abundantly clear when you're a non-drummer playing with Vinnie: You had better be on your toes. His sense of timing and where he puts his accents are one of a kind, and other cats can lose him, quickly. (see Stubenhaus and Hancock in other vids) In fact, while his licks are greatness, I believe it's his accents that make him him. At times, he's blowing so hard during some of that uptempo swing that his one becomes a slight afterthought. Then again, I love a blowing Vinnie and wouldn't have it any other way. :P

Well, on a TV show I think that it's kind of normal to not be surprised by the presence of camera around, they are supposed to do their test too.

But if they are shooting the soundcheck like they did, the movie is not supposed to be out of that TV channel, whatever the quality (good or not, here it's really good), I can understand why Vinnie could be really pissed off...
He would never do a DVD or whatever, and he sees this, oh my... :)

Me I'm glad to be able to have the chance to see that kind of footage, in the same time I saw Vinnie played so much time as close as than that camera, it's what stays in my memory.

Yeah, I was about to write something very similar to this, as well. I'm pretty sure that Vinnie's never surprised by the presence of a camera, anymore. I'm just as sure that he never thought that this soundcheck would be viewed a decade later on the web. The reason I was still surprised is because of how he's traditionally been with any video recording medium in the past. To my eyes, he's usually seemed restrained and, at times, a bit uncomfortable when they're around. (there are exceptions). If he was holding back in this vid, I certainly didn't notice. That's actually the very reason that I'm so happy about this recording, as we may never see footage quite like it, again.

First, thanks for the link. Second, I really dig the insight into his tuning without all the normal processing compression blah blah blah. Third, I agree about the soundcheck thing. I ve played some big casinos for somewhat extended stays and the better sound engineers were actually very happy that I wanted to play for a good while thru their system. I got to feel like John Bonham and they got to tweek the drum sound to perfection. Its a win-win. I've found it is the sound engineers who arent worth their weight in spit that get pissed at the noodling/shredding/practicing during soundcheck or before the gig.

Can anyone tell me how to get this 15 minute video of Vinnie warming. I have footage of him in the studio recording with Alejandro Sanz and he even does like a 20 minute interview about his session.
But I really want to see this one....
