Yeah...no time for getting external mics...I used to be into this
years ago then stopped. Last time I shot Virg at the Spud the audio
was horrible...everything was muted...but there are 1k's of Youtube
vids shot w/cell phones w/good audio...so there has to be a way or
those phones just have better mics or there is a setting or App that
helps.

I think Dave is cool with this...it isn't 2002 anymore. My approach is do
not be obnoxious...low key angle, cover red light, respect for the artist
performing, try to keep a steady shot.

This was really last min so will be a challenge to get it all together...to be honest,
that video Juan posted motivated me...one of my fav Dave performances...just got
excited over that and when Steve said he was playing tonight went into action mode.
I have always wanted to do a multiple shot video and have someone edit it with those
tools/skills...maybe Steve?

Let's talk about Dave's ability to solo around the hits and accents in a piece of music... Anyone got an idea of his methodology for this?

I know Dave was really influenced by Copeland, and the drum set-up is similar. Even the bass drum front hole cut was the same in early Weckl pictures of his kit.

Another comment pointlessly drifts off into the ether...whatever happened to the art of conversation? It's all just look at this / me / whatever...

Well, I think it's all big band influenced, with a touch of Copeland and Gadd. Is it pretty standard BB orchestration?

I think Dave is the most incredible interpreter of syncopated hits in a non-big band setting. The tune "Why Not" on French Toast's record is a great example of this. (Check out the little break @ 0.54 sec.)

Here is the same tune with Dave playing with Michel Camilo's group.

How tight is this playing? Jeepers.

I don't know how he practices this stuff and what his pedagogy entails. Does he just practice these tunes like crazy or does he have exercises? Does he use a book like syncopation to work the hits out? I think he has just practiced these kind of tunes to find as many ways to play around the hits as possible.
He was super on-top of this type of playing early on and it freaked people out.

Here's another early Weckl with Paquito D'rivera-(Gdansk)
He plays a solo at the end while playing the hits. Hitting pretty hard!!!

Weckl is definitely one of the best (and deadly accurate) at this kind of thing. It’s something I’ve always wondered myself, he really seems to get way inside a tune, especially syncopation-wise.

I don’t know about Weckl specifically, but I do notice the players who can “sing” synchopation well seem to have that tight/clean sound really happening. Steve Holmes does this a lot in his internet videos/lessons. He can sing back a phrase very accurately while snapping a pulse with his fingers. It may seem like an off-hand thing, but I think it’s a super valuable skill. I had a teacher who once told me, “if you can sing it from memory, you can play it.” I would bet Weckl is pretty good at that sort of thing too. And yes, I’m sure a thorough big band background has considerable influence as well.

Just my thoughts.
