Can anyone recommend some jazz albums that would be simple for a beginner to play along to, medium tempo swing?

This site is great. It's proper standards minus the drums. You can preview them before you buy. Great of practincing and building repertoire at the same time.

Check out Tommy Iggoe's, I think it's the first 'groove essentials' has a lot of jazz stuff, there are other book/CDs out with charts and so forth as well.

Also you can check out the 'Turn It Up and Lay It Down' CD's, I believe there is a jazz disc in the series.

This is great stuff, thanks. I was thinking more about album recommendations, for students to play along to and start to understand the feel of different player's interpretations of the ride cymbal beat.

There is a cool track at the end of 'Groove Essentials' that is a jazz tempo ramp, basically an easy form from 60bpm to 360 the purpose is to see how the ride cymbal changes as the tempo increase, it's a fantastic idea and in my experience seems to be a great tool for students.

Kind of Blue is an excellent resource to practice with. Med / Slow blues, with incredible feel and some fairly basic comping ideas.

That's like learning to ride a pony by jumping on a bull.

My vote is for anything that is Art Blakey (Jazz Messenger stuff). It's all about supporting the soloist and is meat and potatoes; however, the groove is deeper than the Mariana Trench. Can't go wrong with him.
