drumming in Vegas

Postby deseipel » Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:50 am

Hey guys, I came across a band who plays in Vegas and the thought occurred to me, "I wonder if any HOD cats live in or near Vegas?" What's your impression/experience being a working drummer in Vegas? Seems like a town where you could work a lot, no?

Here's the group I came across:

Yellow Brick Road is a great cover band, seen them a few times. Highly recommend seeing them. I am not in Vegas Friday or Saturday.

I have to go to work in Vegas for my day job about every 2-3 weeks...going again next week. Usually there Monday-Thurs.

I really liked it when Mandalay Bay had live bands in the lounge area. They converted that lounge to an "ultra lounge" called "Eye Candy" and only have a DJ now. There is another stage by the sushi bar...but when they have live bands they don't start until after 10pm. Since I need to work...need to be getting sleep. Last trip they just had a dueling piano act...pretty lame.

It was great when they would have a "smooth jazz" band in the early evening, then switching to a dance band in the later part. It was fun to get to know some of the drummers and they were all killer players. Sometimes the drummer would play in both bands while the rest of the band totally changed. Seemed to be quite a network of interchanging players. Most of the places have house kits, it seemed, for the lounges.

Fast forward about 4 years...I don't even stay on the strip anymore. No live music until late, and I need to be coherent in the morning. If places on the strip do have bands, it seems they don't start until 10 pm, 11pm, or even midnight.

One of my first trips I saw Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani together on a Tuesday night at House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. I thought it would be great going to Vegas. Now I hate it...can't wait for the company to hire a full-time person there!

With the economy sucking...it has got to suck for the musicians who were/are playing in about 6 bands, maybe 3 gigs a day...I don't see it now.

Maybe someone else has a brighter slant...hope so.
