I was thinking the exact same thing.

I'd really like to read DiCenso's and Frip's explanation of what keeping time in the mind is as a practical matter. I'm not exactly sure what it means. I don't think I could keep good time without some physical reference, even if it's just nodding my head or my breathing rate. If I try to think about keeping time only in my mind, I still find myself thinking of some physical motion as a reference, even if I'm just singing the beat in my mind.

A couple of weeks ago I was trying out the Vinnie solo from Against the Clock. The 5's in that solo have always mystified me the way their broken up. Then I realized if stopped thinking about the drumming and just felt them, I realized I was listening to the resolution of the keyboard and not even thinking about what I was playing. I started to execute those passages. I have no idea if that's what DiCenso meant, but it sort of opened some new doors to me in how I play ... I feel more courageous to stretch more because I'm not thinking about subdividing what I'm playing, but in my head I guess I'm multi-tasking ... feeling my playing while keeping time in my head listening to something else.

This footage is a first-run-through-no-rehearsal rendition of the amazing Morse tune "On the Pipe".

Great old clip. Thanks! It reminded me of this one - I went to school with this guy, you may know him :)

This.

I'm totally late with chiming in on this thread, but I had to do it. In my mind, this is the guy who's carried the Vinnie/Gadd/Weckl crown while simultaneously making it his own, and I really don't believe that it's a stretch to say that. We can all clearly see that his licks are based on the Big Three (sorry, Boston/Miami), but the difference with him and some others is that it doesn't detract one bit from what he does. Over the years, we've heard people use terms like "Vinnie Stuff"; DiCenso's in that ballpark, folks. (no, he's not the innovator that VC and the others are, but he's earned a seat in the stadium). I would be every bit as excited to see Dave in a Baked Potato-type of setting as I would any of the others. I first saw clips of him on this forum years ago, and it's easily been my favorite drum discovery since that time. Anyway, I just had to type.

Interesting discussion regarding Effortless Mastery...another thread probably.

When does it come a time that you play out of your strengths rather than focus on weakness?

Strength development is a hot topic today is you read Marcus Buckingham or heard about
StrengthsFinder 2.0. A friend of mine lectures to Fortune 500 companies all over the US
on this stuff. I think it is relevant for the musician as well as the employee.
