New Tony Williams Lifetime 1979 w/ B. Brunel video

The French archives have opened up in the last few years and we have seen uncirculated, prime era Mahavishnu, Miles and now Tony Williams Lifetime emerge from the Jazz festival at Juan Les Pins. This gives me hope that some Holdsworth or Mclaughlin era Lifetime video will show up one day.

More about this video; its great but the producer was asleep at the controls and missed a lot of Tony's "stuff' while focusing on the keyboard players hands. That said, this fills in a little bit of a gap in video from Tony. Nothing until now floating around from the 73-80 period.

Todd Carver- gtr
Tom Grant, Bob Harris - keys
Bunny Brunel - bass

1979 Juan Les Pins Jazz Festival, Antibes France July 19, 1979

There is a hole in available video performances of Tony from 1972 until 80/81. The existence of this video closes that gap a little. I also like that it's in the 'jumpsuit' phase of Tony's career, always a favorite of mine. I do not recall any other performance of Wild Life on video either.

This video is notable on many levels. Too bad about the synth's audio and the bad camera work that results in missing some money shots, but I really enjoyed Bunny and have to admit to a soft spot for what many consider cheesy 70s analog synth farts and squirts and the Million $$ Legs album too. AFAIK, this you tube clip is complete at only 26min. Its obviously an abridged version of the set, but a more complete version probably does not exist. Love Tony's solo at 18min. Lots to love on this vid but its not quite the holy grail. . . still keeping my fingers crossed that some Holdsworth or Mclaughlin with Tony emerges someday. Until then I will enjoy this one.

Here is Wild Life by itself:

Here is another jumpsuit era video that recently surfaced from VSOP II with Wynton and Branford at Umbria in 83:

audio and video are bad but the solo is fantastic.

Thanks for this cool video, I had never seen it.

I stumble upon this Tony Williams clinic (from PASIC 1985 I think) while checking out the video of Lifetime. For those who haven't seen it, it's a must. Tony talks about cool stuff and plays some crazy ideas too.

Hope you enjoy it!

(and thanks to Juan for showing me how to post videos)

That footage is from Zildjian Day in Dallas - 1985 - I was at this show - same show as the YouTube footage of Vinnie C. playing red Yamaha RCs - Simon Phillips, Louis Bellson, and Kenwood Dennard were also
on the show..( actually filmed at Richardson High School auditorium in Richardson , TX )

I simply can't get the Tony thing. Try as I might I always think his drums sound poor and I never find interest in his solos. I feel like I'm the only one who isn't getting it. Cool stuff to see none the less
