First, I doubt DC was holding back. When he's doing one of his masterpiece solos he's already played for awhile, playing music where he's been stretching his brain. Creatively, I don't see you can get there in this kind of setting. You don't have 128 bars to build something and work it, which I think is Chambers' specialty. There wasn't any time to get to edge where he likes to live. It was 3-2-1, better be ready to smoke it on the downbeat. I imagine it being a very emotionally flat moment, lest you let the adrenaline claim basic brain function.
I liked the song choice, I liked his feel. That song is so hard to recapture the swunky magic. That space between sixteenths and triplets ... I thought DC nailed it.

Where was Gadd?
Isn't he the obvious choice?
I think Gadd was Jordan's primary go-to guy when he needed someone to sit in back when Letterman first launched, so they might've been going for some new blood with the lineup. Besides, I'm pretty sure he's on tour with Clapton right now.
“Let's try some of my songs.” Dave Grohl, top sign drummer will be fired.
