I always love watching this, love the shot of young Vinnie all excited asking questions to his hero (wish he'd give us the chance to do the same more often), but by far my fav part is when someone asks him to play some swing. I could watch Tony play swing forever, his more percussive, tribal if you will, drumming doesn't appeals to me as much except maybe on an emotional level of what he transmited., but his swing playing, those bass drum accents and just utterly insane stuff.

A total inspiration, I can say I "get" Tony.

Thanks!

Tony Williams in favor of copping other players' stuff. Vinnie needs to go back and watch this.
“Let's try some of my songs.” Dave Grohl, top sign drummer will be fired.

Damn, as you wrote God I thought I would see some Vinnie clips... :D

But Tony is really AWESOME in that clip, a real drum God without any doubt.
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

Hey man, you're the king of Tony's videos. Is there any way to find a good quality version of this video? Was it ever offered for sale by Zildjian?

I just acquired a 10min segment (some playing portions) of this video in much improved quality. I will put it on youtube in 480 soon. AFAIK, this was never commercially available. This performance was filmed at a Zildjian Days clinic in TX, April 28, 1985. Also filmed at the same venue/date is that amazing Vinnie on the red yammies, Simon Phillips in the red jumpsuit on the Tama Artstars, Kenwood Dennard doing his singing/drumming/woodstroke thing and a wild Tommy Aldridge thing. It seems Zildjian filmed several cities during this mid-eighties clinic onslaught in places like Boston and Chicago and, of course, the New York show which became the over-the-counter drum porn of my childhood and is almost singularly responsible for making a drum VIDEO dork. There is also a 1995 Scotland that was given away as a promo item that has Vinnie and Tony (on the tubby DW's) as well. Seems only New York and London were actually produced and sold.

FWIW, this video has been permanently available, in its entirety, for free, for the past, 5 years at DIME:

The youtube is almost certainly sourced from this DVD.

Other Zildjian day stuff:
Vinnie TX 85

Matched Grip Vinnie in Boston(?)

Steve Smith in Chicago:

Gadd in Boston

Gadd somewhere else i dunno where
