New vid: "Just Groove Me" play along

Postby Steve Holmes » Sun Nov 20, 2011 9:39 pm

Bought a new wide angle lens, I'm much happier with what's viewable now.
This tune was challenging in a couple of ways. Mostly it was the drum solo vamp. Basically the figures I wanted to hit are on the "and" and then the "e" of 4. Very awkward since we mostly play through 4 and on to 1. I flubbed a couple of them but whatever. The overall spirit of the tune is conveyed I think?
Also coming up with parts is always an interesting process, trying to find the balance between too much, too little, what kind of energy do I want? Tight hat? Open hat? Ride? The things we all have to consider when creating drum parts. How to play behind the guitar solo? Also, overall energy...I really like this tune so I got carried away with the bashing at times. I don't think it hinders too much.

Really tasty playing as always. I'm glad you you've reached a point in your playing where although you have a ton of facility, your focusing on the music and what you need to do to make it happen. :D I think the bashing was an emotional response to the music and therefore warranted. Was that an Oz Noy Play-Track? :o Ooooooo...... Can you share?

Really fun to watch.

I like the considerations you pointed out. Agree, these are the tough and important things.

Your ride cymbal (and how you play it) is killer.

Some of your finest playing shared in youtube so far...
Groovy yet raw and edgy (in a good way!).
Congrats... kit sounds great btw.

Like a boss!

And bro, if you flubbed a bit on the vamp solo that's totally understandable, that was a tough vamp to play over. If I could inject some possitive criticism, I wouldn't have gone so much for the licks on the toms, but more subtle playing on the cymbals, accenting and playing with the dynamics a bit. I totally wouldnt be able to play licks over that, so props for pulling it off though.

Good gosh, Steve! Incredible playing, man! I was going to ask how you handle that drum vamp section. I openly admit getting thrown a few times practicing that section, even looking at the chart. You nailed it. Off to the practice room.

I'd like to see you fit that snare with a crispy new head (and tune it just a nudge higher for my taste) ;) , but as
always really cool playing, man. I particularly enjoyed you following the rhythmic pattern in the guitar solo
at the 2:26 mark. Nice. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder why you have a day job, and are not out on tour with someone!

(although...your day gig is pretty cool, too, right?)
