ooohhh I gotta watch that interview ^^.
Omar was a huge influence when he was with Sting. Seeing the I Burn For You drum solo really messed with young me.

I remember seeing this as a teenaged drummer and knowing I was seeing some incredible stuff, but with absolutely no idea what was going on. He had an amazing solo.

This was also really cool, I forget what channel Rockschool used to be on, probably PBS. Bring Rockschool back...well, we do have Youtube with millions of instructional vids on how to play guitar without knowing music theory...

Feb. 12th, Happy Birthday King Omar !!!
That drum intro drives me nut as much as the "Modern Love"'s one, the whole song Omar is killing it !!!

I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

Omar was a monster from the beginning. His "I Burn For You" solo on Bring On The Night was a seminal moment for me in '85, right around the time I discovered Vinnie on Zappa's Tinseltown Rebellion. That moved me from my Kansas/Yes/Rush phase into Jazz/Fusion stuff.

Awesome - love the Gretsch before Omar's Yamaha endorsement came through... :-)

Actually, I'm really surprised Zawinul would have agreed to go on stage with Manhattan Transfer like that.......

I just remember the passage in Peter Erskine's book "No Beethoven", where Joni Mitchell asked all of WR to be the backing band for her Shadows and Light tour (not just Jaco), and Zawinul squashed it... "We ain't no fu**ing LA Express" (reference to Tom Scott's band that backed her earlier in the 70's)

Good point... Sounds like they "made him an offer he couldn't refuse"
