My first intro to Simon was in high school...my buddy Brian was probably the hottest drummer
in HS and we devoured Judas Priest. Sin After Sin was out and Simon was on it. Nothing
really hit me on this album. Then The Michael Schenker Group released their first LP. WHOA!!!

I mean...WHOA!!!

Simon now became THE MAN!

The tune, Feels Like A Good Thing intro blew us away;

But it was Armed & Ready @ :18-28 seconds into the tune that blew us away. His phrasing was something
none of us ever through of at the time. This album really kills and Simon around 22 at the time he recorded!
Sounds as fresh today...his open hats also screwed with our heads at the time...just blew us away.

Fun thinking back on this time period...

Wow.

I really never got into the music he did with MSG. That is some nuts drumming.

He doesn't play rock in a really "rock" way, IMO. He is way too thoughtful a player, too much groove and pocket, not enough brute force attack.

Compare his take on JP with Les Binks'.

Doesn't detract from how crazy good the playing is, and the toms sound insanely good.

He has his spots in these tracks where it is simply astounding what he's playing. Something those other guys don't have.

Well, I liked Les Binks' playing, he had some madness about him.

First time I ever heard Simon was on this:

After hearing this, I searched out other records with Simon and then saw him live the following year with Jeff Beck on the "There And Back" tour. That record is still a desert island classic. He's so good.

LES BINKS RULED!!!

Some of the cleanest rock drumming ever! Too many chops for JP
which is why they hired the new gun for British Steel (best album
cover ever)

Smallcreep's Day has some unbelievable playing.

He played with a British guitar player Gordon Giltrap back in the 70s as well, and it's more great playing.

Love this stuff.

So much fantastic playing from Simon. I can't get enough of the work he did with Pete Townshend. His playing on the 'White City' album is the stuff of legend but there is one tune on 'All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes' called 'Exquisitely Bored' that is, in my opinion, some of Simon's best playing. The subtle coaxing of tones and textures from the hi-hat and snare are a masterclass in tasteful yet artistic playing. You won't find that kind of playing in any book. Crappy Youtube clips aren't even worth listening to.

I like this pop ditty from Judie Tzuke:

PSP is a great band with great music. I think they're releasing a live DVD soon (I hope anyway).

Snap! First saw Simon on that tour, in Manchester. That was a jaw-dropper. I believe my very first thought was "that little bugger looks like he's having fun - who the hell is he?"

Here's another "pop" appearance from SiPhi, this time with The Corrs. Still brings it.
