DW Tom head advice needed
Re: DW Tom head advice needed
I'm loving my DWs w/ Coated G1s on top and bottom. On gigs that are more 'rock/r&b' and less 'Fly Me To the Moon', I throw on some moongels.
Please, dear God, stop them from clapping on 1 and 3.

I see that the DW is now selling their drum heads on their website. They say they're crimped to specifically fit their drums. Maybe give those a shot?
I, personally, haven't had any luck tuning to the pitches stamped on the inside of the drums and think it's BS too. I tune to where they really resonate - I do this with any brand drum - it's the sweet spot. Some heads are harder to get to hum - that usually means it's not going to be something I personally like. Bottom head first. Then, top. Depending on the room, I'll throw on some moongels if needed.

I've had a lot of positive results with the Evans GPlus coated- kind of the same idea as and Ambassador X, I just haven't messed with the latter yet. Recently suggested the GPlus' to another DW drummer and he was super happy. Any DW's that I own like single ply heads better than double!

Re: DW Tom head advice needed
I currently have Evans coated EC1's on my toms 10x8, 12x8, 14x14, 16x14 and an EQ4 on the kick, 22x18. i actually put those on because i got all 5 heads for 30$ on clearance. At first I wasnt sure how i felt about them, but they have really grown on me. they are still pretty fat and round but they get enough click and attack to be pretty versatile. Ive used these same heads about a year, ( i dont like to change very often, if it aint broke...). In that year ive played aton of reggae, funk gigs, some hard rock gigs, plus i toured big theaters doing some country swing/Mario Lanza type stuff and they have excelled everytime. That being said, I am fairly obsessive about my tuning. Also the drums are going on 6 years old which i believe is a major factor. 6 years of vibrating and the wood curing and drying a bit more has contributed greatly to the development of the kit's sound. the first year I had them I contemplated selling them a few times, but im glad I didnt. As far as tuning what works for one guy may not work for another, When i tune my top heads slightly higher, i dont get a crappy boxy basketball on the concrete sound as mentioned earlier. Sometimes when i tune the bottom head higher it doesnt sound right to me, but that is what almost every drummer under the sun swears by, on paper at least, haha. Just dont be afraid to sit and turn and adjust the lugs, just playing with it to see what effect it has on the sound.
As far as ripping on DW's? I get it, even though I love my drums. i have an 11 year old Birch Custom yamaha set that owns. I have alot more leeway with tuning on my Yamahas though. My 10 year old daughter could change the heads and tune the Yammies and they would sound awesome. The DWs take a little more work.

Here's my take on DW's...
From this...

All things aside, I believe Neal Peart can tune... He's had some of the best sounding drum recordings ever..
Definitely a difference in onal quality for sure...

Chris P sums it up nicely in his early post. It takes practice....this http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/ and about 5 cups of coffee and a long Saturday morning helped me immensely years ago...
