Re: imagining practice
Ive been thinking of this(no pun intended) for a long while. I was just a bit hesitant to vocalize it behind the fact I figured most people would tell me I was off my rocker. Thanks for posting.

Re: imagining practice
I read a book in which there is a chapter about mental practice for musicians.
The author advice is to imagine you are practicing in a relaxed position, when you're about to sleep for example, and try to imagine you are seeing things as if you were holding your instrument.

Re: imagining practice
I remember a quote I heard from Jaco Pastorius in my early teens. Since then I started visualizing the guitar neck and learned scale patterns on the bus to and from school. It works great with everything, though. I often mention this to my students both on guitar and drums.

yes, this is what they have you do in dance all the time. you think of your movement in space and in your body. works for anything--even thinking through situations [ie; planning for an uncomfortable discussion].
i recently played my first drumming+singing gig [just one tune]. we only had one rehearsal and i'd never played the song before. but i thought about it a lot. all things considered, and for a first pass, it came out pretty good.
thinking through stuff reduces anxiety, too.

Re: imagining practice
I think people use visualization naturally, without thinking about what it is, or how to use it more effectively.
