I saw a facebook status update today from drummer Gerry Brown saying "Welcome back Vinnie to Yamaha!"

[if this is the case]
That's pretty much the worst thing he could do, from a credibility standpoint. When he was 'with' Yamaha, he was actually playing Gretsch because... they sounded better.
That was even close to the official reason why he left Yamaha. "I was always a Gretsch player in the studio"-type wording floated around at that time.
I wish everyone would pay less attention to what stars are playing. Go check out drum sets in the flesh. If you like a set, play it. Don't double standard yourself.

No, the worst thing he could do is stop playing.
You're assuming that today's (actually, tomorrow's) Yamaha drums are the same as yesterday's Yamaha drums. They're not.
And he hasn't decided to endorse anyone yet. It may be Yamaha in the end, but nothing is definite right now.

Come on now, credibilty is in his drumming, maybe you should pay less attention to what stars are playing.
Your boy Virgil kills whatever he uses crappy drums like Remo, Premier or Pearl (my taste), you know what I mean...
I come from Tain, Vinnie, Omar, Jeff, Fish, Stewart, and many more...

^^
Indeed, virgil played zildjians way back, endorsed paiste en premier before moving to pearl and sabian. And those brands provide him the sounds he was always looking for???? Seriously? And never layed a hand on his old paistes......

As for younger kids being influenced by their favorite drummers, it makes perfect sense. A young drummer with very little experience playing doesn't even know the difference between average and great drums. They don't have the experience and "ears" to hear quality yet. Even if they get the chance to try out various drums in a store (which many don't because not every store stocks every make) they're not going to be able to hear a big difference (although they may decide on appearances alone). Young drummers will tend to follow their teacher's advice, or go by what their favorite drummer uses.
When The Beatles played Ed Sullivan, Ludwig couldn't keep up with the demand.

My bad. (if he's) going back to Yamaha is obviously the single greatest thing the world has ever seen. Non debatable.
