Funny, Dave mentioned exactly the same thing as the guy who is engineering my current project regarding the room...my friend is looking to expand his control room so he can get farther away from the playback in order to hear all of the frequencies. Being just a player I've never given that much thought. My assumption has always been that it's the speakers only but it really does make sense. Not just for the control room but the performance rooms as well. Iso booths, in my experience, don't really allow the drums to reach their full sonic potential. I remember recording in the "big" room at a large studio one time...we were doing a country ballad I wrote that leaned toward that arena sound and the room just allowed the drums to breath, deeply...being able to hang a couple ambient mics in the far corners along with the close mics and overheads helped produce this enormous sound. I wish I knew more about it...for now I leave it to those guys who have paid their dues in that area.

IMO, what separates guys that know how to turn on the PA from a true front-of-house engineer is knowing how to tune the room....
