From Simon Phillips' website, regarding head change frequency:

"As a rule on tour I would change toms 2, 3 & 4 every show, 5 every 2 or 3 shows and 1 & 6 every 4 or 5 shows. I use 2 snare drums a show and they would have a new head every show. The kick drums get changed about once a year. The bottom heads would stay on for years. Obviously Die Cast hoops sound quite a bit different to triple flange hoops - but then so does the head itself. I have used Remo Ambassador Clear for as long as I can remember."

Funny he would keep the bottom heads on for so long. They definitely get worn from movement as much as the batters, just not worn from impact, though...

He's going through basically a couple hundred heads per tour at that rate. Phew! That is a ton!

When I'm working for Weckl, I swap out snare heads after 6 or 7 gigs (= 15-18 hours), toms at about twice that interval.

Dave plays a lot of notes, but with a pretty light pressure.

First post.

I have mesh heads (I will in a few days anyway) because I just recently moved into an apartment. :|

I finally got around to trying out the Remo coated clear dots on the batter side of my toms (Gretsch) last week, and....

I didn't like them at all. It made my toms sound like "vintage" drums; less sustain, no brilliance, kind of cardboard-y. I put on new clear ambassadors the next day. Much better.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. I still have to try white suede heads someday...

I just put coated EC2's on my toms and an EQ4 on the kick. I have a gretsch renown kit and I have to say for those edges and shell,(hoops, etc.) G2's; especially the coated, work best for them. I used to use only Remo but when it comes to durability you can't beat Evans. Keep in mind that every head loses it's tone at some point...

I tried the Remo Black Suede heads when they first came out - awful - talk about boxy!

I've tried various set ups and always go back to coated ambs on top, clear on bottom - can't fix what isn't broke. I use a control sound on snare, hazy on bottom. Coated powerstroke 3 on bass batter. Coated Amb. on resonant = awesome combination.

I've been using Coated G2's on my tom and floor tom for years. G1 Clear on the resonant side.
Power Center and Hazy 300 on my snare drum and EMAD/Retroscreen on my bass drum.
