Do it yourself Topic - DIY

Open topic: MODIFIED VIC FIRTH HEADPHONES (or whatever) and DO IT YOURSELF.
So don´t be shy with the tool box !!

I read on some Simon Phillips´s interview : “I have been drilling holes in drums since I was about 14 years old..."

Well, I´ve followed one of my favourite habits too… Do It Yourself.
I´ve modified my VIC FIRTH SIH1 headphones, changing its drivers for a new ones.
I´ve mounted the drivers of a Sennheiser HD 205 on the VF, with some cutting, connectors soldering, etc…I am not bad with tools, but the electronic part is not my forte, though enough for this.

Since many years ago, I have the VIC FIRTH SIH1 headphones for practicing. But its drivers are bad: low volume, almost cero bass response and a (almost) telephone general sound. Also, I don´t like in-ear monitoring for practicing and recording at home.

So for this modification, I have checked some drum isolation phones in the market, and checked and listened to some standard headphones, from 50-200 euros, I made the decision: join the good things of both: Isolation and good sound.
(Sennheiser HD 205 cost about 50 euros)

I plugged some models on my Iphone, played some music and…this model had an EXCELLENT BASS RESPONSE and a very good highs and mids frecs. The sound is very good, with that bass that I couldn´t hear before.

The result of the combination of the VIC FIRTH and the SENNHEISER, after some weeks with them, is AWESOME.

So I achieved some important things:
* I´ve kept what I loved about the Vic Firths:
- Isolation, not extreme (I don´t want it extreme), just what I need.
- The BEAUTIFUL direct sound that I get from my drums (The drums seems to be equalized, without plugging the headphones). More “beautiful” direct sound than with every headphones big/good ones I´ve used.
- The strong construcction and durability of all the VF parts.
* An excellent sound through them, thanks to the new drivers of the Sennheiser.
* Now I can just plug my player and play directly over it with a very nice feel (with the original drivers it wasn´t possible)
* When I play with all mixed (headphones plugged on the mixer), I can hear my bass drum with a real sound, and a whole very improved sound quality and with less general volume.

So I am happy.

Don´t close the topic to headphones…
Anyone with some DO IT YOURSELF things/experience…?
I think that since I drilled my Pearl Master Custom bass drum, for mounting the toms holder piece (some years ago)…some customized things have been added to my gear.

And You ??

Fed up with the Gretsch strainer and butt always getting stripped and having to get new bolts, I opted to swap them out. I installed a Yamaha adjustable butt which fit the same holes, and a Tama Linear Drive throwoff which required drilling one new hole. I put a bolt in one of the remaining unused holes. I'm very happy with the drum now and will probably do the same to my other wooden Gretsch snare.

Interesting thing I found out recently is that Gretsch can build you a snare with NO strainer or butt installed if you desire, and not only that, they will even install whatever you want instead for you. I wish I had known that was an option.
