Anatomy of Drumming

Postby john lamb » Wed Jun 24, 2015 9:49 pm

I just published my new book: Anatomy of Drumming: Move Better, Feel Better, Play Better. Through developing a more accurate understanding of the body, you will improve your technique and reduce injuries. The book covers basic anatomy and how it applies to drumming, and reviews topics such as traditional vs matched, ideal seat height, common repetitive motion injuries, the weird science behind Moeller technique and more.

Looks great! And the topic is pretty underrepresented in drumming literature, I reckon. Good luck!

Thanks! It is underrepresented - especially for the drum set. There is beginning to be a sizable catalog of books about orchestral instruments - recent research is finding that injury rates among professional musicians is shockingly high. I haven't seen much really useful information about injury - even including most of the articles written by doctors in MD or other magazines isn't as useful as it could be because the writers aren't approaching it from a "what you need to know is....." point of view. For a few people, this approach is preaching to the choir, but not enough, unfortunately. I ran into a longtime friend at a show recently who asked about it, and wished me the best of luck, but clearly wasn't interested in the topic, and went back to sitting behind his drums in such a way that is sure to cause him real pain at some point. :(

Injury in musicianship is just like injury in working out - unappreciated. I didn't make much of it until I severely strained my right hand tendons doing pullups. Only then did I realise that I have to be careful to be able to continue doing something I like without interruptions. I guess that's how human psychology is constructed, we just won't give a shit unless we experience it. You have to be a recovering drug addict to start preaching that "drugs are bad, mmmkay?". Otherwise neither yourself nor others will think you're believable ;)
