While Bonham is justly recognized for his fat, deep-as-the-ocean groove, I think his technical skills are somewhat underraetd.

Listen to this solo...the man had great rudimental chops, especially in his early career - plenty of speed and power.

This was really GREAT! First thing that pops is the sound. The snare.
That snare (how he hits) is just MAGIC to me. PERFECT comes to mind.
It's HUGE...powerful, distinctive! When the snare, BD, and hats sound
amazing...along with the toms, you're 80% there. His cymbals also
matched the kit perfectly.

As noted in this thread he is (not) hitting so hard, but his style is so bombastic
and "thunderous." This was early 70's right? Important to just benchmark:
NO internet, instructional videos, many drum schools, etc. It was listening
to records and seeing Live drummers. I think because of this a drummer
noodled in his "shed" developing his style without the informational blitz
we have today. Youtube is just insane when it comes to "learning and
entertainment" in this sense.

Bonham has this inner "sensibility" to how far he goes. Jeff once said that
if he had the technique of Hakim and Vinnie it would be a problem in the
studio. I interpret this as, "I would play in a way that would detract from
the track I was on." Most of Jeff's bread and butter was 2 & 4...and he
did it incredibly well. I guess my point is JB played with Zep by always
laying down a strong foudational groove to support all the fills and nuances.
His ability to let the time feel open (space) without the need to fill all the
holes made such a huge impact when he did. That is composition to me.
He just really know what NOT to play so well!

A lot of Bonham's sound would have been lost in translation had he tracked the 'modern' way, ie Pro Tools. The difference between the sound of a recording like 'In the Evening' compared to your average digital rock track is startling. It's the same thing for digital effects, what would you choose, CGI pumped out by some film fx sweatshop or Blade Runner.

Ahhh, hot summer day and I'm now all over Bonham. This was new to me.

The Senators! (1964...Bonham's first recording?)

Nicky James (1965)

Band of Joy

This one really has JB Zep fills all over it.

Just gotta throw Carmine in a Bonham thread...chicken and the egg thing with this
classic, "Like WOW man groovy vibe"

I remember reading an interview with Keith Copeland in which he had very nice things to say about the musical way Bonham played cymbals, and it's always stuck with me. Pick the right spot for the right cymbal.

Searching for it on the web, I found Keith passed last year...

From Coda. I think this is from a sound check that was recorded. One of my favorite Bonham recordings of all time.

Had a question today that reminded me of John Bonham...

Play a 25 minute drum solo. The audacity! And the entire audience (maybe!) was into it....
