Soul Search: Led me to Funk

Postby Pocketplayer » Mon Nov 13, 2017 4:41 pm

The funk thing has been lurking beneath the surface for a long time now
and I finally decided to let it out...I want to play old school FUNK...
w/R&B in the background.

I've been devouring Herbie Hancock's;
-- Headhunters 1973
-- Man Child 1975
-- Fat Albert Rotunda

Songs like Doin' It, Gentle Thoughts & Swamp Rat get me going.
Love the Meters, but not the compositions so much...Herbie's stuff
is more musical for me.

Anyone go through this phase and have anything to offer, love to hear it,
especially practice ideas. Looking over Jim Payne's stuff and Mike Clark's
ideas. Want to absorb this world through listening...any recordings you
recommend?

I got a few avenues...

And for a different angle on it. Some thick grooves that bounce and percolate. Tony Allen is the man. Love his grooves. Once I started into practicing afrobeat I got more comfortable with straight rock grooves. There are a lot of things going on here that can take a while to unpack.

That Chuck Brown is da bomb-a-diddle for me!

This guy has a some good resources in PDF's--worked out the stickings
from his funk drumming page...cool guy, helped me when I was thinking about
doing a cruise ship gig...didn't know sight reading was so important which
kicked my butt on the audition. I told them I got most ABBA tunes down!
Chocked on the Sinatra tunes...hard.

John Guerin's playing is so slick. That youtube channel looks to need to investigating lol.

There's someone who deserves a bit more recognition. Played on one of my all time favourite albums, too.

Right up there with the best.

His playing on Court and Spark is so good. Every fill is right there and fits the music without being too visible. Those dead toms too, why do they sound so perfect for those tunes? A perfect sounding Yamaha kit would not be appropriate imo. Too in the way of Joni’s voice and the other instruments.

First off, Youtube is freakin' amazing! We are living in a crazy time...
the i-generation doesn't understand how insane it is to think of a song,
type the title, press enter and boom, song! That said, I just got my first
STRIKE on Youtube...this makes NO sense...I made a clip of a TV show
and there are at least 100 others clips of this show, why did they jack
me over? Flame rant for the day...

Back to FUNK!
First, this I DETEST (trying not to say hate), loath, just do not dig this sound and feel;

This is more what I dig...what I want to play, get inside this music, and love
the drum sound--a boxy popping snare, dry...OH MAMA...how I love that sound!

LOVE THIS...probably the song that got me into drumming as a little kid more than any

the build up and groove @2:15 is IT for me!

This is just too good to pass by...1975 pretty much rules!

Somebody named Raúl.Nicolás has an insane compilation of
funk & soul old school music;

OK...doping my own thread, but...this groove KILLS. I have
been OD'ing on old school funk and Darryl Brown's hat work
here is incredible--that "up beat" hat 'chick' kills me.
Man...will be devouring this tune...love this stuff.
