He gets those DWs to sound great. Chad Wackerman gets a good sound on them too, but Virgil is easily the best example for DW. They usually sound lifeless in anyone else's hands.

Virgil sounds somewhat the same to me on DW and Pearl. Chad gets a decent sound out of DW, even here on Virgil's set:

I agree, except for the fact that Virgil has gotten better at producing his own (videos and) audio in his studio.

If you take the closing solo in Renaissance, I don't think he'd be able to produce those drum sounds 6-7 years ago:

Thanks for your answer Jeppe, I must confess that my favorite Virgil's sound was his days with Remo.
I was not that fan of his "dead" sound with Premier, but I do remember a VERY FEROCIOUS drum solo on some drum fest, bloody hell !!!

He was playing 8" and 10" toms on those drums, and I think he was using Evans Blue Hydraulic heads. Perhaps that is what you liked.

Actually (and sorry for geeking out) the small tom was a 9" and the heads are Remo Emperor, just the lighting was blue.
Remo heads are probably Virgil's longest professional relationship.

9" tom? Holy cow, I didn't know that anyone actually made one! That would be a nice option, along with 11" (which Tama made for a while).

9 and 11 mounted on the bass drum and 13 and 15 mounted floor toms would be really interesting.

Likes Ambassadors, but plays Emperors a lot because of durability.


Going through heads is strange to a light hitter like me who can easily use a set of Ambs for a year or two. Only thing I break is BD heads and I think the other heads sound fine.

Quite understandable. But I think Evans heads on Remo drums would somehow fuck with the space-time continuum
